The Making · Guide
Resole or repair. Built to be resoled, not replaced.
When the sole wears through, the pair comes back to the bench that made it. The upper outlives several soles. Bring it back early, and a resole is all it needs.
When it needs a resole
A new sole on the same upper. R750.
- The sole is thin under the ball of the foot: press it with your thumb and it gives.
- A hole, or a soft patch, has opened anywhere on the sole.
- On a welted pair, the stitching under the sole has worn through.
Don’t wait for a hole. Walking on a worn-through sole can damage what lies beneath it, and then the job is bigger.
When it needs a repair
Everything the bench can do to restore a pair, short of a full resole. R450.
- The heel is worn down at the back edge.
- A seam has opened, the lining has worn, an eyelet or hardware has failed.
- Anything else short of a full resole.
Not sure which? A photograph is enough for the bench to say.
Which pairs the bench takes in
- SixKings pairs, in any of the three builds: Blake-stitched, hand-welted or storm welt.
- Welted shoes from other makers, once the bench has seen photographs and said yes.
How it works
- 01
Send a photograph
On WhatsApp: the soles, the heels and the side of the pair. Say whether SixKings made it, and if not, who did.
- 02
The bench replies
Resole or repair, the price, and when it will be ready.
- 03
Bring it in
To the Atelier, Shop 11, Greenlyn Village, Menlo Park. Outside Pretoria, the bench arranges the courier: R100 each way.
- 04
Back in 1–2 weeks
You pay on collection.
Between resoles
Give a pair a day’s rest between wears so the leather can dry out, with a shoe tree in it while it rests.
